Xerostomia, or commonly called “dry mouth” refers to a condition in which your mouth does not produce enough saliva to keep your mouth wet and moisturized.
Saliva is extremely important for your oral health because it not only keeps your mouth moist and comfortable but also keeps your teeth strong by protecting the tooth enamel and preventing tooth decay.
Dry mouth has multiple causes, including aging, side effects of certain medications, cancer therapy or even nervousness or stress. Treatment varies depending on the cause but you can try these home remedies to help keep your salivary glands healthy and your mouth moisturized:
- Drink plenty of water: Water is important to keep you hydrated. Sipping water can help cleanse your teeth and tongue while keeping your mouth wet.
- Suck on sugar-free candies/ Chew Sugar-free gum: Hard candy as well as gum stimulates the flow of saliva in your mouth. Make sure to pick sugar-free options because sugar candies contribute to the development of tooth decay.
- Limit your caffeine intake: caffeine beverages can make your mouth drier. Choose decaffeinated options to not exacerbate your dry mouth symptoms.
